Great Production Efficiency for Maximum Profits; Get the Corrosion Inhibitor

Corrosion is a chemical reaction usually occurring on metals that causes gradual degradation of the material. It is an electrochemical oxidation process that is promoted by the presence of oxygen on the contact surface, and results in formation of oxides. The most common form of corrosion is rusting.

Contact of metals with acid containing liquids such as sulphuric acids and hydrochloric acids also results in corrosion.

Dissolved carbon dioxide is also a major element that causes corrosion to occur. Presence of organic acids in the solution can also be a major cause of corrosion in metals.
This oxidation process destroys the structural elements of the metal such as the strength, permeability and the appearance of the material.
In industries handling liquids, corrosion has highly destructive effects due to degradation of pipes as well as metal surfaces thus increasing the maintenance costs and reducing efficiency due to the downtimes during production.

Operation of the Corrosion Inhibitor

To prevent these losses from occurring, corrosion inhibitors have been developed. When these are added they reduce the rate of corrosion thus maintaining the pipes in good condition. Introduction of a protective coating such as chrome plating is one method of preventing corrosion. However this is not generally a viable idea.
Various types of corrosion inhibitors are available. They are classified based on their solubility properties such as oil soluble, water-soluble and water dispersible formulations. They act by removing oxygen by compounds such as the amines or hydrazine.  Oxygen is converted to water by hydrazine thus removing the threat of corrosion.
Sulphites and ascorbic acid are other anti oxidants which are corrosion inhibitors.
Other forms of inhibitors form a chemical coating on the metal surface thus preventing corrosion. Benzotriazole is one compound used for this purpose in protection of copper pipes.
Inhibitors used in the oil lines have water-soluble amines, which act by conversion of the dissolved oxygen to water.
In water pipes, the main corrosive process is oxidation. Inhibition of oxygen in the water solution will therefore prevent corrosion. Compounds containing phosphates and poly phosphates are used to prevent this corrosion. They also reduce build up of mineral such as calcium, manganese and iron which increase the rate of oxidation and dirty water results.

Where to Find the Corrosion Inhibitor

The particular properties of the liquid are an important consideration determining the type of inhibitor to use. A thorough analysis must be done on the chemical reaction occurring to cause the corrosion thus determine the best inhibitor to use.
Manufacturers dealing with oil field chemicals must include corrosion inhibitors in their product range. The inhibitors are also available from water treatment companies who have to constantly dose the water systems using these inhibitors.

Conclusion
Corrosion is the gradual process of chemical degradation of material usually metals through a process of electro chemical oxidation. This process leads to the loss of physical properties of the material thus must be stopped. Main agents of corrosion are oxygen, carbon dioxide and acids present in the liquid. Corrosion inhibitors act by preventing this chemical reaction from occurring. They act by removing oxygen in the water or combining with dissolved carbon dioxide to release inert compounds. These inhibitors are available from reagents manufacturers and even online shops.
